While platform choices have definitely gotten a bit more cut and dried over the course of the past year and a half, it’s still not an easy decision to make. You still have to consider how much the machine conforms to your concept of “ideal” when you purchase it. such as how easy it is to perform any upgrades you might want down the road (particularly hard drives, disc burners and memory), whether all the ports you need are present, and so on.

A great place to start is taking video of art in public spaces. Your city or the artists might want to have a visual record of this. If you can get a lavalier mic. the subject will be much more comfortable. If you don’t have one. hold the microphone yourself.

DIFFRACTION: This occurs as light travels through an aperture, especially one that is closed due to increased light. The resolution of the image will actually decrease with diffraction; to avoid it, control the light going into the lens with neutral density filters or with filters, diffusion, etc. on the lights themselves. Keep the aperture as open as possible with smaller-chip cameras.

In our example of the school play, this kind of mic would have been ideal to record the dialogue onstage. My neighbor could have followed the action by aiming the mic in the general direction of the actors as they spoke their lines. Even better, he could have arranged with his wife or another willing volunteer to sit in the first row and follow the action from there. 15 rows closer to the speakers.

Which locks into the battery when you activate the long blue release switch. Anton/Bauer includes a few “sticky pads” for the small plate, to make a rock-solid attachment. However, we had to re-tighten the plate before we got a good fit. There is a small amount of play where the battery meets the camcorder. We think this is quite acceptable for general use, but it may be a turn-off for the discerning videog-rapher.

AGC Repair

Automatic Gain Control (AGC) is the bane of audio purists the world over. It’s one of those ideas that looks great on paper but sounds bad in the real world. AGC in your camcorder works by listening to the incoming audio and raising or lowering the gain in response to the signal level. In theory, this should make the soft sounds louder while keeping the loudest sounds under control. In practice, AGC tends to pump up the background noise when there is no dialog or other sound. Once the sound resumes, the AGC pushes the volume back down, usually overcompensating for the ing on the phone, but the caller never greeted the other person. The only way to fix this error was to create the dialog from other bits of his performance. Since the segment was short and the caller could be off-camera, it seemed easy enough. Unfortunately, that two second audio clip took almost an hour to assemble, edit and massage. Start by timing the empty section, and then go through the recorded performances to find individual words or phrases that can be repurposed. You can do a rough edit of the new dialog in your video

When using reflectors, mirrors and bounce cards, you have to treat them just like lighting instruments. This includes the distance they are from the talent. To increase the intensity of the light coming off of a reflector, you need only to move it closer to the talent. To decrease the intensity, move it further away. As in lighting, the way it works is double the distance from the subject and it reduces the intensity of the light four times. Cut the distance in half and the light becomes 4 times more intense.

Setups – The Sun
Let’s start with the easiest setups and take advantage of the beautiful spring or summer sun. First of all, think of the sun as a very small, very intense light. The sun is best used during the morning and late afternoon hours to take advantage of its color, as well as the angle of the light. But, believe it or not, you can also use the sun at high noon!
If you do have to shoot at noon, place your talent in the shade of a tree with a shaded background. Place a smooth surface reflector in the sun at the 3 o’clock position and reflect the sun towards another smooth surface reflector or mirror positioned above and at the 11 o’clock position behind your talent. Focus this reflector onto the back of the talent’s head and shoulders. Use another soft gold reflector slightly above and at the 5 o’clock position and bounce the light from the back reflector into your talent’s face for a very nice soft warm light.

Back to the Basics
There are a couple of things about light you need to remember when trying to create beautiful lighting using one or no lights. They are: 1. Light moves in a straight line and 2. The bigger the light
source, the softer the light will appear on screen.
Using the fact that light moves in a straight line is easy. All you need is a reflector or mirror. If you use a smooth surface silver reflector or mirror, you will get an exact duplicate of the light minus a bit of intensity, depending on how far the reflector is from the subject. Keep in mind that the smooth reflector or mirror is reflecting the light and will be quite bright. Treat it just like any other light. Using a silver reflector with a bumpy surface will decrease and soften the light by spreading it out directionally. A pebbled gold reflector will add a soft warm color to the light.
Keeping in mind that the bigger the light, the softer the effect enables you to decide what kinds of light or reflectors you will need. To create a soft-edged light for interviews and single shots of your talent, you will want to use large lights and textured surface reflectors. If you want your lighting to be very dramatic and hard-edged, use a small, intense light or a selection of smooth-surfaced reflectors or mirrors.

If you are using an ordinary television set, make sure you turn off any automatic color correction controls. With an ordinary television set or an NTSC monitor without the Blue Only option, you can make these adjustments by viewing the monitor through a Wratten 47B dark blue photographic filter, which can be purchased at any well-stocked camera store. Adjust the same way as if you had a Blue Only button. Lighting is about finesse, control, and knowing how to use the tools at hand to create beautiful, well-lit images. But what if you have only one light – or maybe no lights? How do you design good-looking images? How can you create three-point lighting with only one light? All you have to do is run around the house, grab a few mirrors, dig in to your lighting kit for some reflectors and you are on your way! In this column, we will look at different ways you can use one or no lights to create beautifully lit scenes using mirrors, reflectors and solid lighting techniques.

USING AN EVERYDAY TV MONITOR IS NOT IDEAL

Next, we will set the white level for the monitor by turning up contrast .control (a.k.a. picture) all the way. There is a white bar, almost square actually, in the lower left of the color bars. With the contrast turned all the way up, this bar should bloom into the neighboring bars. Turn the contrast control down until you see crisp lines around the white bar. Let’s say you’ve decided to suck it up and drop the dinero on the pro NTSC monitor. You would think that sacrifice would be enough, but now you need to calibrate it. Just having the hunk of
glass and plastic is not enough. Don’t worry, it is like anything else: after you do it enough times, it becomes second nature. Let’s look at all the factors that will make your evaluation of your picture with an NTSC monitor ideal.

What to do with all your tape? Why not turn it into a paying venture? Randy Hansen recommends handing out DVDs of your work at games, or planning a pizza party after the game and showing your work there. Then let everybody know that they can get a copy—for a fee, of course. You may not know that you can get a name brand, 600 lines of resolution, NTSC monitor for new at around $600 (see the Display/Monitor Buyers Guide, September 2006). Yet the fact remains: if you are going to get serious about video, you’re going to need to somehow acquire a professional, external NTSC monitor (PAL, if working in a PAL country or for an outlet in one).
The colors you see on your computer, no matter how expensive your computer monitor, will not look the same on a television set or in the theater. The computer has a different color range, as well as different latitude in contrast or gamma curve. Using an everyday TV monitor is not ideal, but better than no exterior monitor at all.

Don’t forget to interview the sports heroes after the game – their impressions, recap and analysis – as well as some of the fans, the coaches, and spectators. You can add voice overs to the action and have your sports hero explain what’s happening and how it felt to be there.

Don’t Get Stuck
No doubt half the parents who spy you with a video camera will suddenly become the targets of angry spouses, berating them for not thinking to videotape the game themselves. They’ll try and cajole you into giving them copies of the tape. Which is fine – just don’t get stuck spending your whole weekend duping tapes when you could be out tossing the ball with Junior or building that gazebo in the back yard. It would be useful to consider beforehand what you should charge for tape duplication and print that up on a card. There are plenty of weekend warriors out there who have turned their hobby into a small business that keeps them in the latest and greatest hardware and editing software.

Sun in your eyes?—will you be shooting into the sun from where you’re sitting? If so, you might want to consider moving, even if it puts you in the visitors’ bleachers – just try not to cheer too loudly.
Hey, down in front!—is there a space specifically for press? If not, get a seat where people won’t be standing between you and the action. When Junior makes his touchdown, you don’t want the back of some guy’s head to be the only record you have of it.
Randy Hansen, chief photographer for WINK-TV, has been videotaping sports for years and recommends that at a minimum you should have a camera with a good quick zoom and extra batteries. That, however, isn’t nearly as important as understanding the game. “That requires,” says Hansen, “you know where to be when it’s 3rd and 9 (down field about 10-12 yards). If you don’t know, I wouldn’t shoot the sport until you could learn more about it.” Randy also says it’s vital to grab a copy of the program with all the players’ names and jersey numbers to reference later.

Your computer is now effectively

After transferring all of your footage to your edit computer, you sync each of your video streams at the beginning and roll all simultaneously. Your computer is now effectively a live switcher and you are the technical director, “cutting” from wide-angle to close-up shots on the fly. In the end, you should have a finished product, less possibly some graphics and music.
While there are not many unique aspects of editing a vidcast, several workflow habits will make your job easier when editing episodic shows. First, be sure to establish a consistent filing system. Have video assets you will reuse on each show, like your open, graphics, music, credits and any other transitional elements, all in one directory. This will greatly speed up your edit session. Next, create and stick to a consistent project naming system. There’s no need to get creative here; clarity is far more important. The episode number and date work well if used like this: “2007_Ep_45_5-01″ [signifying episode number 45 was shot or will upload on May 1, 2007]. This way, when you go to sort your project files in the same folder, they will be in order even across multiple years.

For Openers
Having a short catchy open that visually summarizes what your vidcast is all about is important. Since it’s the first thing a new viewer will see, it has the awesome task of compelling them to continue watching. It can be as simple as cutting together a few clips from your first show or as complex as a high-energy array of shots highlighting unique aspects of your subject matter, complete with custom graphics and logo. In either case, keep it short, say five to 15 seconds, and be sure to include at 3t your show’s title and possibly the episode number.

What should you look for on a hard drive? Capacity is the first thing that usually comes to mind, naturally. The sweet spot for price vs. capacity (lowest cost per gigabyte) is moving toward 500GB drives, now that the big manufacturers are shipping 750GB drives and have announced 1TB drives. You’ll also see a reference to cache size—8MB is most common, but anything above 2MB is generally fine. Big caches give you a speed advantage for dealing with a lot of small files, not a handful of really big files. Spindle speeds of 7200 rpm are the most common you’ll come across, for good reason: they’re fast and they’re a good value. While you can get 10,000 and 15,000 rpm hard drives, they’re pricey and they run hot. But if you need to render something really fast, this is one potential place where you could get a speed advantage. We think the best place to implement a drive with a spindle speed above 7200 rpm is as a scratch drive, though we’ve seen a few computers that have them installed as boot drives.
